Sewaholic’s Granville shirt has just been released to massive fan acclaim after months of teaser IG posts. And, true to Sewaholic’s form, it looks spectacular: princess seams in the back, darts in the front, tower plackets, a nice two-piece collar, and some beautifully-made-up pattern samples. (Hey, just because we like to snark doesn’t mean we can’t give compliments where they’re due.) It’s a lovely, fitted button-up shirt that would work in light woven fabrics.
But Sewaholic’s target market is the pear-shaped woman. If you are busty of chest or slender of hip, the alterations required on the Sewaholic patterns might be off-putting; or, you may just want a similar pattern for a smaller price.
Well, you’re in luck! The Big 4 and Burda have been putting out button-up shirt patterns for decades, and there are plenty to choose from. Here’s a small selection:
- Vogue 8747
- Vogue 8689
- Vogue 9029
- McCall’s 6076

Burda 09/2012 #111 Silk Blouse /#112 Printed Blouse
This fitted blouse has front and back yokes, front princess seams, back darts, a gathered front, and cuff and collar options (both #111 and #112 are the same PDF pattern, with each showing different views).
Thanks for this post. I’m quite new to sewing and discovering new blogs all the time, I’d love to sew myself a shirt but being a larger lady with a big bust, I covet all these indie patterns but the reality is they’d need so much adjusting and I’m not skilled enough to do that yet (plus I kind of don’t see the point buying a pattern that would never work for me), so I appreciate the info on the other patterns! 🙂

Actually I think McCall’s 6438 is the closest to the Granville. It has a dart instead of princess lines. And it goes up to a DDD cup. Just made one in a D and liked it.

Hi Justine, do you mean this McCall’s 6438? The current number is a skirt pattern.

Typo and double post. Sorry. Yeah it’s McCall’s 6436.

I’d recommend McCall’s 6438 if you are trying to get a similar look to the Granville. No princess lines and it goes up to a DDD cup.

All three of these have bust darts like the Granville. They also have different sleeve lengths and the New Look and Burdastyle have sleeveless options too.

Lekala 5505, with front & back yokes, collar stand, c/b seam & bust darts, or Lekala
5081, with back darts, bust darts & no collar stand would be very cheap options. Their free pattern, Lekala
5446, is also worth a look – back darts, bust darts and collar stand. I made it over a year ago and although it’s less fitted than it looks on Lekala’s site, it went together like a dream and the collar is one of the nicest I’ve ever made. Of course, you need to be happy to use a reference book when necessary for techniques, as their instructions cannot – to put it mildly – be described as comprehensive.

I’ll throw in a vote for McCall’s 6035, which I’ve made 2x now — it has princess lines, which I find MUCH easier to fit than darts. Also, multiple cup size options, woo (A-D)! The collar is 2-piece and well-drafted too. The sleeve options are on the wacky side but I found a tutorial on how to draft both tower plackets and a cuff so I’m off to the races with my Granville dupe! 🙂
